Diving in Bimini
Bimini is located in the west of the Bahamas, just a short flight away from Florida. An ideal location for divers coming from the US, but definitely worth a trip for any diver, especially shark lovers.
Bimini is well known for its wild dolphins and abundance in stingrays, reef sharks and most excitingly, the great hammerhead shark.
What people might not know about Bimini is its abundance of beautiful and colorful coral reefs, sheer drop offs, wall dives and interesting shallow wrecks, offering diving opportunities for all levels. Night diving, drift diving, easy leisure diving, wreck diving, cavern diving, tech diving, shark diving, and more can be booked at the various dive centers on the island.
Most diving from Bimini is accessed by boat, so if you want to enjoy calm seas, the best time to go is in the dry season between November and May.
For shark lovers, the best time to go is between December and March where your chance to see great hammerhead sharks or bull sharks is much higher.
Bimini Hammerhead Shark Diving
Shark encounters are common around Bimini, you can even see nurse sharks or reef sharks just off the beach in the shallow waters. For the larger sharks you will need to take a trip a bit further afield, there are dive sites known for their caribbean reef shark and blacknose shark sightings, as well as other sites frequented by hammerhead sharks and even bull sharks.
Located near the resort Bimini Big Game Club there is a dive site named “Bull Run” named as such due to it being frequented by bull sharks between December through March, other sharks that are almost always to be sighted there include black tip reef sharks, nurse sharks and lemon sharks. Many tour operators only offer this dive as a cage dive experience, which might not be for everyone, so do your research before booking.
Although a hammerhead sighting is possible while diving around Bimini, there is a special “hammerhead headquarters” where it is known to find these sharks. It is typical here to attract the sharks by baiting the water, a practice that not all divers would agree with. Once a hammerhead is sighted, the divers will be invited to enter the water and descend to the sandy bottom at a whopping 6 meters / 20 feet deep! The shallow depth allows divers to stay underwater for a long time and enjoy the grand event.
Important safety tip! The water temperatures can be a cool 22-24 degrees celsius / 70 – 75 Fahrenheit and as you will not be moving on the dive it is advisable to suit up accordingly in a 7mm wetsuit or semi dry suit and wear a hood and gloves.
